Volunteer
Whether helping to organize rural libraries, developing reading activities with Child Aid staff, or working with children, volunteers are critical to our work in Latin America. We welcome volunteers with relevant skills and expertise for periods of two weeks or more. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred, but it may not be required for skilled professionals from relevant fields. The type of service is dependent on an individual’s field of study, professional experience and interest.
In Guatemala, we have a particular need for volunteers from the fields of library science and primary education. Volunteers at CORAL are typically trained audiologists, hearing specialists, speech therapists, special-education teachers, and art and music therapists.
If you are interested in volunteering, please consider the following requirements.
- You must be 21 or older.
- You must be proficient in Spanish unless you are a medical, education, computer or library profession.
- You must be available to volunteer for a period of at least two weeks.
- If volunteering in Guatemala, you must be willing to travel in public buses for up to two hours at a time.
- You must be able to cover the cost of your own food and living expenses while volunteering; positions are unpaid. Exceptions may be made for skilled professionals from relevant fields. The minimum costs for basic food and accommodations is roughly $600/mo in Guatemala and Oaxaca.
If you meet all of these requirements, we’d love to hear from you. Please email us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), and tell us your travel dates, interests, background and the length of time you’d like to volunteer. We will then contact you to discuss potential opportunities and the application process. Due to our size and the type of work we do in the rural communities, we are not able to accommodate volunteers with children.
